Zach Bradford, a fifth-year pole vaulter at Texas Tech and a six-time NCAA Division 1 All-American as well as a four-time Big 12 champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his return to Albuquerque, N.M., and the competition March 10 at the Division 1 Indoor Championships. Bradford and Branson Ellis of Stephen F. Austin are the only two male pole vaulters who qualified for the 2020 NCAA indoor meet that was canceled on the eve of the event who have returned to compete at this year's final. Bradford, a Kansas transfer, cleared a personal-best 19-1.50 (5.83m) on Feb. 4 at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic at the Albuquerque Convention Center to place second behind reigning Division 1 indoor and outdoor champion Sondre Guttormsen of Princeton, as the European Athletics Indoor Championships gold medalist from Norway cleared 19-4.25 (5.90m) to prevail in a showdown of two of the top performers in NCAA history. Guttormsen elevated to the No. 5 all-time collegiate indoor competitor, with Bradford ascending to the No. 8 vaulter. Bradford, who represented the United States by securing a silver medal at the 2018 World Under-20 Championships in Finland and again as the youngest member of Team USA in 2019 at the World Championships in Doha, also became the only athlete in NCAA indoor history to clear at least 19-1.50 and not win the competition. Bradford explains how significant early first-attempt clearances will be to place the pressure on the rest of the field and the strategy of passing certain heights at crucial stages of the competition. Bradford also examines the consistency of his vaulting this season, clearing at 18-4.75 (5.61m) in all six meets, and expresses gratitude for being able to win a fourth Big 12 title in a row with an 18-5.50 (5.63m) clearance, despite battling a sore groin throughout the competition. He speaks about building a relationship following his transfer with Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley and how grateful Bradford was to be a part of a men's team title at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Bradford also analyzes how meaningful it would be to capture the first men's team championship for the Red Raiders at the Division 1 indoor final, in addition to becoming the first men's pole vaulter in program history to secure the indoor crown. He also provides a preview of what creative hair style will be showcased for the championship meet.
