Devin Loudermilk, a junior at Kansas and the reigning Big 12 Conference Indoor men's high jump champion along with a returning first-team All-American, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his lifetime-best 7-5 (2.26m) clearance to capture the title at the Sports Performance Center at Texas Tech in Lubbock and preparing for the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships on March 9 at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston. Loudermilk, who took third at the Division 1 indoor final last year with a 7-3 (2.21m) clearance in Albuquerque, N.M., is excited for a rematch with reigning champion and Jamaican star Romaine Beckford of Arkansas. He reflects on competing against Beckford and 2022 Division 1 indoor champion Vernon Turner, a former Oklahoma standout, on Feb. 10 at the Tyson Invitational at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., with all three competitors achieving 7-3 clearances. Loudermilk examines his consistency Feb. 24 at the Big 12 indoor final, producing first-attempt clearances on his first six heights, including 7-5, before missing three opportunities at 7-6 (2.29m). He explains how beneficial it was to have attempts at 7-6 ahead of competing in Boston in order to manage his emotions and energy more efficiently at the Division 1 indoor championship meet. Loudermilk revisits battling a quadriceps injury during the outdoor postseason in May, which unfortunately resulted in him not being able to advance past the Division 1 West Regionals in Sacramento, Calif. He shares how significant and meaningful it was to have former Kansas All-American Rylee Anderson as a teammate and fellow high jumper, and how special it was for both competitors to achieve podium finishes at last year's Division 1 indoor final at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Loudermilk expresses gratitude for the leadership and guidance of Kansas associate head coach Tom Hays, who specializes in mentoring the vertical jumpers for the Jayhawks. He also analyzes how valuable it will be to have teammates Clayton Simms and Ashton Barkdull competing in Boston in the men's pole vault, in addition to Michael Joseph in the 400 meters, and how they hope to feed off each other's momentum during the meet, just like they did at the Big 12 indoor final at Texas Tech.
