AMES, Iowa – Seniors Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye and Akela Jones each won long jump titles while fellow senior Brady Grunder won the men’s weight throw title as day one of the Big 12 Championships came to a close at the Lied Recreation Center  on Friday.

After six scored events, the seventh-ranked Kansas State women are in third place with 29 total points, while the men currently sit in second place with 35 points, leaving them just eight points shy of matching their 43 total points scored at last season’s conference meet.

En route to her second-consecutive long jump title, Jones’ final mark of 6.75m/22-01.75 broke the Big 12 meet record of 6.59m/21-07.50 set by Francine Simpson of Kansas and Lorraine Ugen of TCU. Her mark also set a new Lied Recreation Center record, breaking the previous mark of 6.62m/21-08.75 in 1998 by UNLV’s Shunta Rose.
