Fernandez 3:55 Mile Breaks Junior World, Big 12 and NCAA Records at Big 12 Championships - okstate.comPublished by
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Oklahoma State freshman German Fernandez turned in possibly the best one-mile performance by any collegian in NCAA history at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, finishing with a time of 3:55.02, the sixth fastest time in the world this year.
Fernandez's one-mile time gives him the Big 12 individual championship, a school record, a Big 12 record, an NCAA record, after the previous hand-timed mark of 3:55.00 was converted by adding 0.24 seconds, and an improved junior world record, which he set earlier this year.
"I felt good from the start," Fernandez said. "My goal was just to go after my personal record and it turned out pretty good at the end, so I'm pretty satisfied."
Fernandez also highlighted a successful Cowboy performance in the 3,000 meters, winning the individual championship with a time of 7:57.71, the second-fastest in Big 12 meet history.
Three other Cowboys scored in the event, including John Kosgei, who won the 5,000 meters championship Friday, at second place with a time of 8:00.14, Sean Fleming at sixth place with a time of 8:07.53 and Colby Lowe at eighth place with a time of 8:10.48.
